This is an example of the process that I went through in creating just one of the very simple web pages in my design center. Although it only took me about three days to put this page together, I had been thinking about it off and on for a month or so until I finally had time to sit down and work on it. First, usually I start work on any page by just jotting down some text remarks; pretty simple code. Second, I begin to clean up and expand on the text and put it in a centered table on a page; still pretty simple code. Third, I removed the border of the table, added a header and cleaned up (and expanded) the text; still straight-forward code, although some easy styles being used now. Fourth, this is where I started brainstorming some websites to use as examples of good layout; not much changed with the html code. Fifth, I cleaned up the page by moving all of the examples to a separate examples page (This meant that I had to revise slightly my overall site organization by adding the examples page in a separate directory.) and by using a style sheet; the code was now much more complex. Sixth, I changed the header to fit my page title more exactly; code was about the same. Seventh, I changed a few small things and added a new link to the samples of different page layouts; notice how much more complicated the final code was. And you know, I wasn't done yet. I replaced the header with a *.gif image in the final version of the page. |
