This is one of the Birkenau camp crematoria, left in its state of destruction after the war. The Germans, when they retreated from Poland in the face of the advance of the Red Army, tried to destroy the evidence of what they had been done in the extermination camps--There were others besides Auschwitz-Birkenau--but they did not succeed. Birkenau had four gas chambers and four crematoria where more than a million people were systematically killed.
