Research Assignment
The class will be divided into six groups.
Research topic is Ancient Roman clothing, i.e., What did people wear in Ancient Rome? (a deceptively simple question)
Some key words to aide your searches: Rome; Roman empire; Roman republic, dress,
clothing, costume, fashion, textiles, toga!
Some questions to consider: (a) How did gender, class,
geographic location, occasion or tradition affect dress? (b) How did Roman clothing change over time?
In undertaking this research project:
- Group A (Tim, Suzy, Chelsea, Ryan) will only use library encyclopedias and specialized reference works available in the Loudoun
campus library or online
- Group B (William, Kevin, Joe, Sheena and Gilbert) will only use only books
- Groups C (Kathleen, Andrew, David, Lindsay and Brian) and D (Brian A., Sean, Travis, Nicole and Jose) will only use online (or in print) articles
- Groups E (Arya, Beata, Thomas, Eric E. and Serena) and F (Byron, Eric R., Matt and Janelle) will only use websites
You will have one week to conduct your research and prepare your presentation.
Please consider using the resource evaluation guide developed by Jennifer Reynolds,
who also teaches a useful one-credit course on Effective Internet Searching.
Presentation Assignment
Each group will present research findings to the class on Friday, 10 October.
Each presentation (about 10-12 minutes max) will consist of:
- An organized summation of your research findings on the topic of Roman costume
- An electronic guide to accompany
your presentation (either a Powerpoint presentation, a Word document or
a simple website designed by you)
- A review of specific sources of information used and an
assessment of the reliability of that information
- A short list of possible additional key words
or concepts that could help you with further research
- Some suggestion as to where additional, valuable information
might be found
Please make sure that you prepare your
presentation ahead of time, practice it and arrive in class prepared to proceed. Take a look
at Professor Nan Peck's Tips for Preparing a Group Presentation and
also her Tips for Preparing a Talk.
Project will be worth 50 points.
Students who are not assigned to a specific group,
because they missed the Friday, 26 September class:
These students will submit a two-page research paper, worth
a maximum of 50 points, on the assigned topic of Ancient Roman costume. The
paper is due on Friday, 10 October (the same day as the group presentations). Please remember to
follow course writing style rules and guidelines.
