HIS 112
Bao Ninh Paper

Bao Ninh (Hoàng Ấu Phương, 1952-) volunteered for the war in 1969 when he was only seventeen. He was one of the very few from his unit that survived the war. He "published" The Sorrow of War in about 1990, and it first appeared in an English translation in 1994. His novel is, in many respects, very similar to Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front, which we read in HIS 102.
