Northern Virginia Digital History Archive

Red separator bar

We have been working now for quite a few years to create a digital archive to document the recent history of Northern Virginia because the landscape of the region has been changing so dramatically in recent years. It was not that long ago that route 28 was a two-lane road, that there was no Reston Town Center (indeed, even no Reston), no Waddell building, no Kohl's department store on Mirror Ridge, etc. As historians, we are conscious of this change taking place around us and wish to document what will become the past before it has disappeared.

We are looking for contributions of photos that are scenes from anywhere in Northern Virginia (buildings, roads, construction, trees, stores, etc). The photos can be very recent, or they can be older. Depending on your specific course, check with your instructor about extra credit points for contributions or whether your contributions are part of a course requirement.

It is very easy to contribute your photos. Go to novahistory.ctevans.net and click on the "Contribute" button. Select "image" from the drop-down selector and a slightly different form will appear for you to fill out. You must include your name with your submission, and you should supply as many details as possible in your description of the location in your photo. You should also include a short title for your photo. (Sometimes it takes a while for your contribution to upload; just be patient!)

Do not include photos of friends or individual people, but your photos can be of any location in the area (or from any time period).

Please notify your instructor when you have submitted your items.
