For this extra credit (optional) assignment, you may choose to either:
- watch one of the course's recommended movies
- read an approved literary work
- listen to a suggested musical composition
- view some art works (There are many Russian museums that you can check, including the Tretiakov Museum, and there is Olga's Gallery online.)
- check out some other cultural options
You must send your selection to your instructor for approval before you start on this assignment. Please note that you cannot use your selection as one of the extra credit assignments noted in the course. That sounds more confusing than it really is. For example, you cannot read Brusilov's A Soldier's Notebook and do the extra credit assignment in Unit 6 and then also use A Soldier's Notebook for the Russian Culture Paper. On the suggested artist lists for this assignment, an * (asterisk) preceding an item will indicate that the item is also an extra credit option somewhere in HIS 241 or 242.
Answer the following question in a one, or two-page paper: What insight does the work that you have chosen provide about Russian history, society and culture?
Your paper must follow this format.
- must have brief introduction and conclusion paragraphs (each not to exceed three lines); the introduction must directly respond to the assignment question and identify your analysis/thesis points.
- font size 10 or 12 only
- one-inch margins
- double-spaced
- page number citations for your quoted evidence
- name, and only your name, at the top left of the paper
- not to exceed one (1) page
- You may consider submitting a draft of your assignment to your instructor for feedback before submitting the assignment for the grade. At times, you may be asked to rewrite your essay. This is done for your own benefit and will result in an improved grade.
Please take a moment to review Charlie's History Writing Center for specific information on the writing requirements for the assignments in the course. Please check this short explanation of what it means to cite historical evidence.
Your assignment should be submitted on Canvas.
