slate shelf circa 1975
This slate "radiator top" aka shelf aka topper would rest on top of a hot water radiator and was intended to protect walls from rising heat from the radiator. It also served as a shelf on which to put things. The slate absorbed heat from the radiator and then dissipated that heat in an even fashion.
